Paul’s Peg > Finally, a Cap I Can Stand Behind

secretwarsmarveluniversefigures

Marvelous News has got some images of the Marvel Universe Secret Wars comic two packs that will hit shelves later this summer. They simply look fantastic and if you’re a MOC collector you shouldn’t be disappointed. I’m just happy that I will be able to get the chance to get my hands on a Captain America with wings on his head. I’m sorry, but the newfangled wingless Captain America is not my Captain America. My Cap has wings on his head and the constant ringing of Star Spangled Banner in his ears. I’m also really excited to get a Klaw figure for my superheroes to beat the crap out of.

I’m also looking forward to the Wolverine coming in this series. The brown costume one from the Origins series of figures that I picked up was horribly painted and I returned him to the store. Hopefully this one will be a little bit better in both the paint and articulation departments.

The Spider-Man pack is basically Hasbro telling me that I can save a few bucks.

Paul’s Peg > G.I. Joe and Star Wars News Brief

Hey kids, I’ve got some more interesting Star Wars and G.I. Joe news. Let’s do this!

gi-joe-complete-series

G.I. Joe Complete Series on DVD – Even though most of the episodes are horrendous, you know you want the whole series on DVD if you’re a G.I. Joe fan. Shout! Factory has released some deets on the 17 disc box set. It’s going to be available in July and come with some neat extras. Remember, this really isn’t the “whole” series. The even worse DIC series isn’t included.

Undertow is Shipping – The 2009 G.I. Joe Collector’s Club figure, Undertow, is now shipping. That reminds me, I never changed my address with the club. I wonder if I’ll get him…

The Turbo Tank is Awesome – The next big Star Wars vehicle is going to be the Turbo Tank and I pray to sweet Raptor Jesus that I have a job when it comes out. One dude already has one! Lucky jerk.

Another Clone – Commander Ponds is going to be coming out in Animated series style. I have no idea who he is, but he looks kind of neat.

Paul’s Peg > A Star Wars and G.I. Joe News Brief

Hey y’all I know you’re all wrapped up in your He-Mans and Batmans news round these parts, but I figured that we needed a little Star Wars and G.I. Joe loving. There are three quick pieces of G.I. Joe and Star Wars news that I’ll hit you up with and then we can get back to other matters:

Win a Sideshow Stormtrooper – Yep, you heard that right. You can win your very own 12″ Storm Trooper. Better get your entry in now, the contest ends on May 14th.

gijoeriseofcobraiceviper

Ice Viper – Hiss Tank.com has a few images of the Ice Viper figure from upcoming live action film G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. This is notable for two reasons: 1. It’s the first Rise of Cobra figure I’ve actually wanted and 2. It’s odd that the missile he comes with is a modified missile from the Cobra Wolf vehicle. Could we see a rerelease in the future? Probably not, but I’d like to hope so.

Cobra Ferret – Also on Hiss Tank is a prototype of the Cobra Ferret, which doesn’t feature the horrid spring loaded missile launcher found on the tie-in movie vehicle. It’s a guaranteed purchase for me if they can get rid of that thing or at least make it removable.

Paul’s Peg > The Toy Aisle That Time Forgot!

In the Northwoods of Wisconsin there is a toy aisle hidden in a hardware store that time has forgotten. Most of the toys for sale there date back to the early 1990s and a some are even older than that. This hardware store in question is located in a town neighboring the one where I grew up, the population of which is only about four hundred people. In my youth, the store had more than one toy aisle, but as the stuff sells, they seem to be reordering less. It’s a surreal experience that I just had to share. Now let’s check this stuff out:

hardwarestorethattimeforgot06

It’s a toy oven sporting a Care Bear on it. Yeah, I know. I’m guessing its from the 1980s, since that’s an old school styled Care Bear.

That Colorblaster is also friggen old, judging by the hot pink flamingos on the box that just scream horrid 90s art style. My wife has also informed me that she got one of these for her 11th birthday and she just turned 27 this week. I’ll let you do the math.

Paul’s Peg > Terminator Salivation?

Hey y’all, Paul here to talk a bit about the Terminator Salvation toys from Playmates. Since Poe is so awesome at reviewing toys, I’m just going to go ahead and give my two cents on the overall line as well as one figure I picked up. First of all, I think as collectors that the line overall looks kind of like balls. From the first pictures that published online, we all knew that this line wasn’t going to be the kind of quality in our toys that we’ve come accustomed to in the last few years. The human figures are laughable and only a couple of the robots look presentable. The other toys in the line that look passable are the T-1 and the HK, and perhaps the 6-inch endoskeleton if you’re desperate for more Terminator toy action. (more…)

G.I. Joe Resolute: A Sh*t Load of Awesome (Spoiler Free)

Friday was the debut of the G.I. Joe animated project entitled, “G.I. Joe Resolute”. The premier consisted of two short episodes on Adult Swim’s website and quite frankly, they seriously rocked socks. Before I get to my impressions, I need to go on a bit of a rant. The very idea behind Resolute is one that I demand more of, that is, cartoons made for a more adult audience without sacrificing adult story elements for the sake of children. I know that anime has serious story lines and adult themes, but there’s something about 99% of anime that I can’t connect with. Inevitably when trying to watch any anime, I can’t connect with something, be it plot, characterization, or dialogue. I’ve always wanted to see the kinds of themes and stories found in anime, but with western style stories that weren’t dumbed down for kids. Shows like Justice League Unlimited have been a big step forward along with some of the direct to DVD stuff out there, but it has taken us a very long time to even get close to destroying the misconception that cartoons equal children’s entertainment. I want to thank Hasbro for at least trying something like this. (more…)

There’s Another Transformers Exclusive…

In addition to the Soundwave Hasbro is offering at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, they announced that there will be another Transformer available in the form of a Mighty Mugg. It’s Optimus Prime sporting a new metallic finish.

comic-con-mm-optimus

Yeah, I’m not really that big into Mighty Muggs, so this doesn’t even blip on my radar as desirable. There’s a few Mighty Muggs that seem kind of cool, but Transformers make the worst transition to the world of these fake indie toys, due to the fact that Transformers are supposed to be blocky and not flattened out on round surfaces. Nevertheless, I’m sure I’m wrong because my wife said that Optimus here was, “adorable”.

G.I. Joe and Transformers Finally Coming Back to DVD

transformer-cartoon

Hasbro has announced that both the original Transformers and G.I. Joe animated series are going to be on DVD again, brought to us via Shout! Factory and should be available later this year.

This is extremely welcome news to me, because both series have been out of print on DVD for years. As a Joe fan it was even worse than not simply being able to buy them. While the Transformers animated series saw a full release, the G.I. Joe series was never completed before the rights went from Rhino to Sony. Sony, for whatever crazy reason, sat on the license and completely missed the perfect windows for a releases like during the G.I. Joe 25th anniversary and the release of the first Transformers live action movie. In the mean time many fans spent a fortune for the out of print DVDs. For example, the final Joe season was going for over a hundred bucks on Amazon when it originally retailed for around 30 dollars, and the original Joe film was going for double it’s original retail price. Many fans who couldn’t afford the ridiculously inflated prices turned to bootlegs. Hopefully, those that turned to other methods to get their classic toon fix will reinvest in either animated series, so Joe fans can finally complete their collection.

Star Trek Toy Ad That Time Hasn’t Yet Forgotten

Here’s an ad that I meant to post on the “other” toy blog a while back, but then I forgot about it. After seeing a commercial for the new Star Trek flick I remembered how awesome it was and decided I had to share it again if you hadn’t seen it already:

Despite the questionable quality of the Star Trek figures from Playmates, that’s a damned fine toy commercial. It’s just like the old school commercials of old, you know the ones that actually make toys look like a lot of fun. In fact, it looks like it was made back when Playmates were making their old Star Trek line in the 1990s.

I’d flirted with getting the bridge set at some time (even though it’s completely ridiculous most of the pieces are sold separately), this ad does a great job of convincing me that the transporter set is worth a look as well. It’s amazing that they can actually teleport toys these days, I mean, I can’t come up with any other explanation for how that thing works.

TR-57: Lego Clones Goofing Around

I’m an unabashed fan of the clones in the Star Wars universe. I also dig Lego so this video called Planet TR-57 was right up my alley. It’s a pilot episode and judging by the quality of this one, I’d like to see more. It’s pretty funny, even if you’re not as insane about clone troopers as I am. (more…)
