Playmobil Security Checkpoint

If you’ve got a few hours to spare, you might enjoy reading the Amazon customer reviews of the Playmobil Security Checkpoint. The amount of time spent on these is staggering. There’s a ton of them, but here’s one of my favorites:

My family was planning a vacation to Europe, so I purchased this item to teach my twins about what to expect at the airport and hopefully, alleviate some of their anxiety. We also downloaded the actual TSA security checklist from the American Airlines website and then proceeded with our demonstration. Well, first we had to round up a Barbie and a few Bratz dolls to play the other family members, so that cost us a few extra bucks at the Dollar General and it is aggravating that the manufacturer did not make this product “family-friendly.”

Of course, since the Playmobil Dad could not remove his shoes or other clothing items, unlike the Barbie, the playmobil security agent became suspicious and after waving her wand wildly a few dozen times, called her supervisor to wisk the Dad into a special body-cavity search room, (which incidentally led to quite an embarasing and interesting discussion with my twin daughters about personal hygiene and a slight adjustment to the rules we had them memorize about touching by strangers). But worst of all, since the suitcase did not actually open, the baggage inspector made a call to the FBI and ATF bomb squads which then segregated the family’s suitcase (which btw was the only suitcase they provided for our educational family experience) and according to the advanced TSA regulations, had to blow it up, (since they could not otherwise mutilate the luggage, break off the locks and put one of those nice little advisory stickers on it), which we had to simulate out in the backyard with a few M-80s and other fireworks. The girls started crying. They became so hysterical by the whole experience that we could not even get them in the car when the time came to actually take our trip, and so we had to cancel the whole thing at the last minute, losing over $7,000 in airfare and hotel charges that we could not recoup do to the last minute cancellations.

We’ve now spent an additional $3,000 to pay for the girl’s therapy and medication over the past year since this incident occurred, and the psychologists have told us that this will affect them for life–so much for their college fund and our retirement. Then, to top it all off, when we tried to use to Playmobil phone to call the company to ask for reimbursement, as you might expect, of course the damn thing didn’t even work; neither did our efforts to e-mail them using the computer screen on the baggage checkpoint; and our real-life efforts to contact them to obtain reimbursement have also likewise been ignored. Worse yet, we had the product tested and found out that it was positive for both lead paint and toxic chemicals, having been manufactured in China by workers holding formerly American jobs, so now we all have cancer and have been given only another year or so to live. My advice – educating your kids about airport security with this toy may actually be more harmful to them than just packing them in the damn luggage with some bottled water & hoping they survive. 🙂

Odds ‘n Ends

odds_n_ends_09

  • I’m trying to get my mind off the possible weeks-long wait that may be in store for my DCUC6 order. The good news is, my Skeletor and Starfire/Adam Strange set should arrive tomorrow. That will help salve the pain.
  • Have I mentioned I’m rooting for the Gargoyle?
  • This weekend, I went on a toy hunt with fellow Massachusetts collectors PrfktTear and Ed Lee, who produced this awesome video. We didn’t find much, this being MA, but we did get to see several different Walmart layouts and enjoyed being guided on our tour by KITT. According to Ed, my possession of said gizmo makes me a King Nerd, a title I humbly accept.
  • Before this weekend, I’d never watched an episode of The Office–until Dr. Mrs. Ghostal decided it was time to watch what seemed to be every episode of the series via Xboxflix. It’s a funny show, though the episodes start to run together around the twenties or thirties. I love the one where Jim and Pam who aren’t not dating pull the prank on Dwight by getting Michael to awkwardly discuss Phyllis’s fiancee’s ex-con past while walking across hot coals.
  • I came across NECA’s Aliens Warrior yesterday and decided to pick it up. This was a figure I’d been waiting for years to get and…well, I’ll have a review up soon.
  • You know, the wait wouldn’t be so painful if Hawkman didn’t look like the coolest DCUC figure since Deathstroke…

Online orders of DCUC6 delayed?

Now, I’m a big believer in the idea that 99% of unofficial news on the Web should be taken with a heaping spoonful of salt–and if it’s on a fan forum, you might want a whole bowl. And the last official word I received from CSC is that DCUC6 hadn’t arrived and wasn’t expected until the end of this month.

Still, there’s a slight ring of truth to this post that bugs me.

As for your cornerstore questions. I get my comics at their actual store in So Cal on a weekly basis and I asked about the figs this week when I went to get my books. They told me that Mattel messed up their order. Mattel didnt ship ANY Shazam figures to them, They also messed up on the Superman order, intead of sending the specific number of each Superman that CSC requested, Mattel just combined the two numbers and send whatever Supermen they happened to grab off their shelves, so the guys at CSC are having to figure out what Superman they got shorted and which on they have a surplus. Now get this, instead of sending them to Mattel to get the right figures, Mattel told them they would have to trade with other vendors(for example, BigBadToyStore) to get the right order! How lame is that!!

Couple things: first off, be aware that depite the way the post is worded, I believe CSC when they say they haven’t received any figures yet. Rather, it’s likely they’ve told Mattel not to bother sending their figures until everything’s been sorted out on Mattel’s end, and the problem is that Mattel’s warehouses haven’t received Shazam (and are possibly having to sort it out with other online retailers) and are having some kind of problem with Superman.

The whole thing about working it out with trades between the online retailers, though–that sounds to me like something a grumpy employee might have tossed out as a worst-case-scenario, but unlikely to be necessary.

  • First look at Playmates Star Trek figures based on the upcoming movie. WTF happened here? Kirk looks like Dwight from The Office playing dress-up. What’s even funnier is Art Asylum’s far, far superior figures based on the original show are now available at Toys R Us. (TNI)
  • Hi-res images of the Mallah’s Revenge Infinite Heroes 6-pack (TNI)

The Sum of All Skeletors

Some of the folks at He-Man.org came up with an interesting idea: everyone posts how many Skeletors they bought and then they sum them up. So far they’re up to 516, which adds up to $10,320 in sales.

It’s a simple way to get some immediate insight into how well these toys sell.
