Odds ‘n Ends > Jason Goes to Hell

ODD: We’re swinging into high here at PGPoA with the Halloween fun. I realize the whole zombie motif may be a bit 2006, but it was the first idea I thought of. The good thing is we get it out of the way now and I’ll have to come up with something else next year. (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > The Hunt for the Blood Orchid

ODD: I spent twenty minutes making a list of movie sequel subtitles before settling on this one. The things I do for you people!

END: October is Halloween Month at PGPoA, and I am so not ready. The site’s design is prepped, thanks to the hard work of Webmaster OB1 (sounds like one of those novelty geek rappers), but I’m having to work on bringing the mojo. But fear not, the mojo shall be brought, even if I have to draw it out with leeches. (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > Ecks vs. Sever

ODD: Apologies for the lack of an update yesterday. I had jury duty, or rather, I sat around for hours and then was sent home. I swear I do have a backlog of ideas for entries, but a rather sudden rush of other toy-related assignments has distracted me.

END: I won’t get into why–it’s a long story, judging from Thomas’s posts over on Fwoosh–but it appears I won’t be receiving my case of DCUC Series 4 until sometime in October now. So once again, I was prepared for one date, got my hopes up for an earlier date, then had them dashed again by Mattel. Of course, we’ll see if I even get the case in October. At least this crap should end with Series 6, which will be made to order for the online retailers. Fortunately, I’m more than happy just playing with ol’ Deathstroke. (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > The Return of Jafar

ODD: DCUC Series 4 has been found at both Meijers and Wal-Mart…but hasn’t hit CornerStoreComics yet. Still, it’s looking good for those of you who picked earlier rather than later dates in the pool. Unfortunately, it looks like Series 6 will be the last one I can do the contest with (Series 5 is the Wal-Mart exclusive one), given the crazy case packs for Series 7 on.

END: I went off a bit on OAFE’s message boards over yo go re‘s comments on the MOTUC line. I’m planning to write a more comprehensive Poe’s Point on the line at some point. I’m curious to know what others think.

ODD: I’ve got a backlog of posts I want to write, but I’ve been busy at home and, y’know, my real job lately. I’ll try to get back into the swing of things this week.

END: Topless Robot pointed out some cool zombie toys done in the style of the old M.U.S.C.L.E. figures from the ’80s. Check ’em out. (October Toys? Sounds like my kind of company.) But where are the pink ones?

Odds ‘n Ends > The Legend of Curly’s Gold

ODD: Again, apologies for the lack of updates over the weekend. Posting may be somewhat sporadic throughout this month, but for good reason–I’ve got big plans for October. Big, big plans. If any of you happened to be reading my other blog, Biggerboat, in October ’06, you have an inkling of what’s coming. (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > Fire Walk With Me

ODD: As you may have noticed, we’ve made some changes to the site. For one, The Toybox is gone as a menu item. RK and I were just having too much difficulty keeping up with it; however, fear not, for we have other plans in store (particularly for October…) RK also whipped up that new menu image next to Poe’s Point–an “Alien Demon” from the old Blackstar toy line from the 1980s (more on that in a few weeks).

END: As of last week, I’ve got a brand-new home PC. It’s a Dell 530s, with a 22″ widescreen monitor. It’s amazing how much more defined and vibrant PGPoA is when your monitor isn’t six years old. Any recommendations for PC games? I’m thinking I might try Diablo III when it hits. I was addicted to the original Diablo for about three months straight, from June through August 1997. Then I was never able to play it again… (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > A New Beginning

ODD: Well, it seems most of you want the next installment of “It Figures” to feature DCUC Wave 3. Which means a lot of writing for me. I had my fingers crossed for the Mousers exclusive….all right, DCUC3 it is. I’d better start writing now.

END: After weeks of seeing nothing but Movie Master Batman Begins and Scarecrows on the shelves, I finally found some Dark Knight Batmans and Jokers at Wal-Mart over the weekend. I picked up one of each for some friends and only just this minute realized I should have picked up an extra Joker and raffled him off here. Dammit! (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > Better Late than Never (Updated)

ODD: Sorry for the late O&E–believe it or not, I clean forgot about it this week until after I’d spent two hours working on the King Grayskull review.

Speaking of which, that seems to have gone over well, so I think I’ll make the “It Figures” a regular weekly feature (probably on Thursdays). I’ll keep the “Inside the Actors Studio”-style format, and in general I’ll try to review new figures, though I’m sure some old favorites will sneak in there too. For next week, though, it will be a choice between the NECA Mousers exclusive, the Hulk Legends Wendigo, and a round-robin DCUC Wave 3. Which would you like to see?

END: I’ll write more about this in a later post, but the case of DCUC Wave 3 figures I received have a surprising amount of quality control problems. I’ve been inordinately lucky, QC-wise, with most of my online orders over the years. Not so this time.

Hal Jordan’s chest emblem is off-center, Solomon Grundy’s right arm has a gap at the bicep, and the tab holding Deathstroke’s scabbard was glued in wrong, requiring twenty minutes of painstaking Dremel work before the sword would slide in. But the most egregious crime is that my Sinestro Corps Sinestro’s chest emblem is smeared. It looks awful. My Robin and Nightwing are fine; however, it’s been reported that many Robins have an over-sized right hand (possibly from a larger figure, like Black Manta), so watch out for that.

After all the discussion on this site over the last few months, it seems I have to eat a little humble pie when it comes to ordering online. If I’d seen these in a store, I would have passed up Sinestro and Hal Jordan, or at least tried to find ones with better paint jobs.

ODD: October will be here in just a couple scant months, and that means Halloween Month here at PGPoA. If you have any Halloween- or horror-themed ideas or requests for posts, let me know.

END: I forgot to mention–congratulations to Dwaltrip for winning the second “Everybody into the Pool” DCUC contest! With his pick of July 31, he came closest to the actual arrival date of my DCUC3 case.

I’ll put up the contest for DCUC Wave 4 very soon…

Odds ‘n Ends > Fievel Goes West

Odd: Pictures of Hasbro’s new Marvel Universe 3 3/4″ line are up at Action-Figure.com. While I doubt I’ll be collecting the line personally, having exactly zero figures in that scale, I’m pretty impressed by the quality. That they stand head and shoulders above Mattel’s Infinite Heroes in sculpt and articulation is obvious, but from the looks of it, they might even be better than the Toybiz Marvel Toys Superhero Showdown line.

End: As of two days ago, a Mr. Poe Ghostal is married. And to a doctor! I always knew that boy had a good head on his shoulders. That completes the Power Pal Marriage Extravaganza of 2008, folks–Paul, then myself, and now Poe. Congrats!

Odd: My SDCC contact was able to score me a Lobo and a King Grayskull–but then he had to ship out to Virginia for job training for a couple of weeks. Turns out it’s a good thing though, since I wound up needing the cash for car repairs. Hooray for…new fuel pump?

End: It has been a VERY slow week for toy news, so there’s frankly not much to share here. Anyone have any tips for your fellow collectors? Share ’em in the comments!

Odds ‘n Ends > The Secret of the Ooze

ODD: As you may have heard, I’m getting married this weekend. The ceremony is out in Los Angeles–a continent away from our home of Boston–and as such, I won’t really have the ability, time, or inclination to maintain between tomorrow and the end of next week. Therefore, I will be leaving you in the capable hands of Pete, the twisted mind behind Fanwank and Number One to my Picard. You have the conn, Pete. Well, you’ll have it starting Thursday. (more…)
