Brief update

Greetings all. I apologize for the dearth of posts these last few days, but I’m extremely busy with real-life concerns at the moment. Nothing bad, just busy. I owe you a number of things–DCUC Joker review, the MasterPOEce contest poll, the next Forgotten Lore, and so forth, and will get those to you as soon as possible.

In the meantime, may I refer you to Fwoosh’s first look at Jail Cell Joker, and also mention that if you get bored here, you can always stop by the Poester Gallery and create your own topic!

The Panthorlution will not be flockified

flok

If and when Panthor gets added to the ranks of MOTUC, he will not be flocked, says Toy Guru.

Yarg. I’d better jump in here. Haven’t seen everyone focus on just one answer so much, especially with so many other good questions!

To clarify, yes, we did indeed let fans at SDCC 2009 “vote” on the flocking of Panthor. The vote was about 60/40 in favor of an unflocked Panthor. And we did tells fans at the con that due to the close vote, we would look into doing a flocked and and unflocked Panthor. And we did that.

Now that we have looked into it as promised, and seeing the difficulty we are having flocking Moss Man, flocking Panthor just won’t work out. The reason the 80’s version worked well is that there was no articulation. The Battle Cat tool is riddled with awesome articulation and flocking technology just has not changed in the last 40 years. It just doesn not work with highly articualted figures. The flocking falls off when joints are moved. Period.

But in the end, we are not ready to move on any “large scale” beasts beyond Battlecat until we see how BC performs. So Panthor is not even slotted in the line yet. So no reason to jump the gun. Perhapes when and if we get to Panthor we could re-release him in a flocked version, but the first release will indeed be unflocked.

We will continue to listen to fan demand and suggestions, but in the end, putting out quality produdct is our first priority. I don’t think anyone wants a Panthor who’s flocking falls off after ten minutes of posing.

That Mattel isn’t keen to flock Panthor shouldn’t come as a surprise, given all the problems they’ve had with Moss Man. Obviously I’m fine with it–I’m all for nostalgia, but flocking is one of the things I really didn’t like about the original toys.

I mean, I also didn’t want MOTUC to have six points of articulation, swivel shoulders, or “twist-and-punch action,” so this goes right along with my thinking. But that’s just my opinion–what say you?

“Ask Mattel” Answers for 10/1/09

1.) Barbecue17 asks: Recently online stores like Big Bad Toy Store have been unable to fill preorders on DCUC waves 8 and 9 due to being sent less units than they ordered. How can this be good for business if a dedicated toy store cannot even get the Mattel product it ordered and is guaranteed to sell? Can you shed some light on this?

Sorry, we cannot provide specifics on production or shipping counts. (more…)

Mattel Pushes WWE

My awareness of professional wrestling is limited to Hulk Hogan’s cameo in Gremlins 2 and the Macho Man’s beef jerky commercials, but since you folks seem to care a lot about what Mattel’s doing in regard to action figures, I thought this was worth posting.

Wrestling Figs has the scoop on all the upcoming Mattel WWE product. The one I imagine most of you will be interested in is the six-inch “Elite” series, which will come in at $14.99 apiece.

As you can see, unlike DCUC they have ball joint hips.

Forgotten Lore > Ragnar from Rune

“Forgotten Lore” is my Raven-inspired title for a feature in which I examine some unreleased action figure. Pictures are from Raving Toy Maniac.

One of my favorite PC games ever is Rune, a Viking-themed, 3D 3rd-person action game that came out long before 3rd-person action games like God of War were in vogue. In Rune the player takes on the role of Ragnar, a Viking whose village is slaughtered by Conrack, another Viking who serves the evil Loki. (more…)
