Corn Sword

So over the weekend I was looking at my MOTUC Mer-Man and remembered hearing his weapon derogatorily referred to asĀ  a “corn sword” (moreso the original version than the MOTUC one). Curious to see what Google had to say about the term, I punched it in…I think the first result speaks for itself.

Pleased to brighten up your Monday morning: the tender ballad “Corn Sword.”

Review > 3″ Sonic and Tails (Jazwares)

sonicWhile Nintendo seems to have won the pop culture war for most identifiable mascots–Mario, Link and Pikachu are recognized in the smallest corners of the world–it’s easy to forget how incredibly popular Sonic the Hedgehog was upon his debut on the Sega Genesis system in 1991. Sonic was the Genesis’s killer app. I know he was the main reason I asked for a Genesis for Christmas that year.

Sonic the Hedgehog makes me think of weekend sleepovers with my cousin Mike, staying up all hours of the night eating Cheez-Its, cursing the stupid spikes, admiring the awesomeness of the soundtrack to the Spring Yard Zone and making fun of that part of the Marble Zone music that sounded like “I’ll be home for Christmas.” (more…)

“Make Your MasterPOEce” Stage 2: The Poll

The entries are in, and it’s time to take the “Make Your MasterPOEce” contest to the next stage. Originally, the plan was to choose the top 3 entries and then have you, the people, vote on it, but after seeing all the great entries, we decided to change it up a bit. Instead of just three, I’m going to post every

entry below.

Check them out, then vote in the sidebar for your favorites. You can choose up to 3 favorites. Please review all the entries before you vote. Let’s give everyone their due!

The poll starts today and ends on midnight Eastern time on Teela Day, October 15 (meaning 11:59 PM on the 15th, just before it becomes the 16th).

The prizes, as you’ll recall, are as follows: For the Grand Prize Winner, a custom MOTUC Poe Ghostal based on their design created by Passion Designs, Inc., as well as a carded 2002 He-Man signed by the Four Horsemen. The runner-up wins a MOTUC Mer-Man. In the event of a tie, the winner(s) will be decided via a run-off poll.

Let’s meet the contestants! I’m going to post them in the order they were received. (more…)

Review > Joker (DC Universe Classics)

infantino_jokerMattel’s first Joker figure was way back in 2003 as part of their first comic-based Batman line. He was a rare non-Batman variation, which made him popular with collectors. But he also suffered from a common issue with Mattel lines of the time–scale. He was supposed to be a wee bit taller than Batman, but instead, he was too short and small (c.f. MOTU 200X Trap Jaw, who should have been larger).

Finally–after the Joker’s infamous depiction in The Dark Knight, his memorable, twisted turn in Grant Morrison’s “Batman R.I.P.” storyline and his recent bravura performance in the videogame Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mattel has seen fit to allow the Four Horsemen to resculpt everyone’s favorite clown-based psychopath. MOTU, punctuated

Seriously, can we settle this once and for all?

  • Trapjaw? Trap Jaw? Trap-Jaw? Trap-Jaw?
  • Scareglow? Scare Glow? Scare-Glow? Scare-glow?
  • Beastman? Beast Man? Beast-Man? Beast-man?
  • Merman? Mer Man? Mer-Man? Mer-man?
  • Mossman? Moss Man? Moss-Man? Moss-man?
  • Buzzoff? Buzz Off? Buzz-Off? Buzz-off?
  • Man-At-Arms? Man-at-Arms?
  • Man-E-Faces? Man-e-Faces?
  • Evil-Lyn? Evil-lyn?

As a sometimes-copyeditor, this bugs me. Yes it’s pedantic, but I don’t care. Can we get a consensus on this, please?

On the other hand, I’m pretty sure about:

  • He-Man
  • Snake Face
  • Sy-Klone
  • Two-Bad

Paul’s Peg > It’s Coming… The Return of “Joes For Tots”

ComingSoon

One of my pledges last year was to bring back the “Joes for Tots” contest come hell or high water. Well both came and I’m busy working behind the scenes to ensure that Joes for Tots once again encourages collectors to give to kids. If you’re unfamiliar with how it works let me get you up to speed quickly: If you donate a toy(s) to Toys For Tots you can send a picture of yourself doing so and that counts as an entry to the contest. You can also donate cash to their website and send in the proof of the online donation (they give you a receipt with no credit card info on it). Either way, your good deed might get you just a little something extra.
