Review > T-R.I.P. (Terminator Salvation 6″)

I’ll always fondly remember Terminator 2: Judgment Day as the first rated-R film I saw in the theater. At the time, I went through a whole Terminator obsession, which was very much enabled by Kenner’s Terminator action figure line.

In the 1980s and ’90s, Kenner was the only game in town for action figures based on rated-R films. The T2 figures weren’t all that great, even for the time, but the notable exception was the Endoskeleton. Robots are always easier to sculpt accurately than fleshy, round humans, so the Endoskeleton came out pretty well.  Add a light-up eye feature (via a “light pipe”) and a neat head-mounted gun and you had one of the better action figures of the early nineties. At the time, my only disappointment was that the figures were over 6″ tall, meaning they didn’t look right next to my Robocop or X-Men figures. (more…)

Toy news roundup, 2/16/09

newspoeLots of news coming out of Toy Fair, especially from Hasbro. I’ve got someone working on a Hasbro update, but here’s some non-Mattel, non-Hasbro news I found interesting.

  • According to NECA, series 2 of their Ninja Turtles line will be coming out later this year. Hallelujah! (Figures.com)
  • NECA has also managed to hook me for their 7″ Terminator 2 figures. I have to get that shotgun-toting Arnie. (Figures.com)
  • If you’ve never visited the site before, ASM Magazine always has some good Toy Fair coverage.
  • OK, NECA…I know Chun-Li is traditionally depicted with big thighs, but this is ridiculous. (Cool Toy Review)
  • A very Dick Sprang-style Joker is apparently going to show up on Batman: Brave and the Bold…maybe the season finale…? (Cool Toy Review)

  • Skeletor is sold out. Damn, that was fast. Bodes well for MOTUC, though. (Mattycollector)
  • Go Hero is making a Commando Cody 1:6 figure, which I find interesting mostly because CC was featured in a number of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes. Incidentally, where the hell are my MST3K figures, world?! (Figures.com)
  • More pics of Terminator: Salvation toys by Playmates…that thing with the treads will look great next to my 1988 Kenner Ed-260. Y’know, I feel kind of bad for picking on Playmates, since they produced the excellent and beloved TMNT line and the popular Simpsons figures, but these are inexcusable in this day and age. (Figures.com)
  • Diamond Select Toys’ latest Q&A. (Art Asylum)
  • Dude, this Star Wars horror novel’s cover totally ripped off my Odds ‘n Ends pic. Ha ha! Okay not really. (Topless Robot)

  • Studios tell toy stories (Variety) – So, is the He-Man movie on track again? Last I heard it had been condemned to development hell.
  • Playmates 6″ Terminator: Salvation figures up for pre-order (CSC) – Not sure about the humans, but the endoskeletons and the tank look cool. There are 3 3/4″ figures too for those of you who prefer that scale.
  • Mattel posts JLU update for 2009 (Facebook) – For those of you who aren’t on “The ‘Book,” Mattel writes that at Target they’re planning 20 singles, 8 3-packs, and 4 6-packs, and on Mattycollector.com there will be 4 4-packs (one per quarter) and 1 Convention Exclusive.
  • New Masterpiece Grimlock images (Seibertron) – Me Poe want.
  • Voyager Leader-Class ROTF Optimus images (Seibertron)

I’m working on a week’s worth of what I’m going to call “intereviews” (clever, no?) of DCUC Wave Four, so instead I’ll just point you to a few things I found interesting over the last few days. (more…)

Paxton and Henriksen: The Terminator, Alien, and Predator Death Trifecta

If you were a kid in the 1980s with a love of science fiction and action films, you had it made. The combined awesomeness of the Alien, Predator, Terminator and, to a lesser extent, Robocop franchises constituted the best run of bad-ass sf action to date, and all four are still bringing in money in some way or another.

With the exception of Robocop, director John Cameron had at least a minor contribution to each franchise (he suggested Stan Winston add mandibles to the Predator creature design), and directed the first two Terminator films and Aliens. Since Cameron pretty much made the careers of Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen, it’s no surprise they had roles in several of these movies. But both actors also share a very special distinction–they’ve both been killed by a Terminator, an Alien, and a Predator. (more…)

The Original Terminator

deathstroke

Just wanted to highlight this photo I took, which I’m pretty pleased with (though I may re-stage it, with darker lighting and maybe some background to give it a context).

I remember Deathstroke’s solo title came out around 1991 when I was obsessed with Terminator 2. DC made sure to push that “Deathstroke the Terminator” nickname back then, which was fair, since ol’ Slade Wilson predated the first Terminator film by a few years. I never picked up the comic, but I remember thinking Deathstroke looked pretty badass with all those guns and swords. For the record, in a straight fight i’d have to say Deathstroke would demolish a Terminator (except maybe the T-1000).

Odds ‘n Ends > Lifeforce Edition

ODD: I’m trying to streamline PGPoA a bit; from now on, you’ll get Odds ‘n Ends on Tuesdays, Poe’s Points on Thursdays, and a Friday Photo. News, reviews, interviews and commentary will fill the remaining days. Speaking of which, I’ve already got two cool interviews lined up for the coming weeks, so make sure you’ve got our RSS feed bookmarked. (more…)

Cleatus gets beat(us)

I don’t want to write about, read about, or think about the game last night…ever again…but I did want to mention it was cool to see the Fox Sports Robot (who received a shiny new paint job for the event) throw down with the Terminator endoskeleton. Kudos for the marketing gimmick, Fox (especially if it was intended as a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment of the robot’s unpopularity with many viewers).

You can watch the three clips at http://www.myspace.com/superbowlads under the “Fox/NFL Promos” section.
