If there was anyone who was looking forward to the DC Universe Infinite Heroes more than me, I doubt it. When the line first appeared I went ape nuts with the prospect of having tons of my favorite heroes in my favorite scale. Then they came out and boy, the joke was on us toy collectors with it’s overall poor sculpting and horrendous lack of articulation. Still, Mattel seems to be trying to make this thing work and they’ve finally come up with something I truly need:
Joe Acevedo’s CustomCon 23 is going on, and there are some great customs there, including this very cool set of Dollhouse customs by Sasha Powell, a.k.a. MsBig.
Commercially, I suspect Dollhouse would make for a better, say, Minimate property than a 6″ figure line–since most of the characters are just people in normal, if sometimes scanty, clothing–but these are neat.
I’ve resisted the urge to post every mildly amusing geek-related video I come across–and I’m sure 99% of you have already seen this–but it was too amazing not to post. That’s one hell of a cast.
As a kid I had a few Real Ghostbusters toys, including the ‘Busters themselves, but I didn’t love any of them as much as I did Slimer (originally called “The Green Ghost”) and the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man (SPMM).
The original Kenner Stay-Puft figure was about 7″ tall and made from rotocast white vinyl with a smooth finish. He felt a lot like a dog toy, but I think that was part of his appeal.
In 2004, NECA released a titanic, 18″ SPMM. I was lucky enough to get one of these as a Christmas present just a couple years ago. It was rotocast but made from solid material, with a stucco-like texture, a far more pissed-off expression than the Kenner version, and mildly more articulation, though his arms were still stuck jutting out to either side. Dr. Mrs. Ghostal was out of town over the weekend, so Saturday I hung out with Poesters PrfktTear and Ed Lee. We watched Green Lantern: First Flight (I thought it was fairly good, but not as good as Wonder Woman, and also, we’d just seen this story in an episode of Brave and the Bold) and played Turtles in Time: Re-Shelled, which I’m forced to admit has neither the play nor nostalgia value of the original game or even the XBLA release of the first TMNT arcade game.
In the evening, PrfktTear had to head out (though he had an encounter of his own later–perhaps he’ll post about it below) so Ed and I hit a couple of the local stores to see if there was anything interesting. (more…)
