More DCUC mold re-uses

Noisydvl5 over at the FANtastic Exclusive Fourm [sic] has put up a post asking for possible easy re-uses for existing DCUC molds. The Horsemen posted their support for the thread, so if you’ve got any ideas, go check it out.

I wrote something on this topic last week, but I stuck to the Gentleman Ghost/Joker body for that one. There was another one I had in mind, though, and I used the FE post to mention it: Doctor Destiny. He’s a Justice League villain who looks very similar to a certain Evil Lord of Destruction (although Destiny came first), but he’s probably well known enough to show up in DCUC, particularly since he made an appearance in the recent Justice League animated series. The character himself is cool, but I’ll admit his real appeal to me is his color scheme and similarity to Skeletor.

Here are a couple photos of Doctor Destiny, followed by my Photoshopped version of a potential DCUC version. Mine is mostly a repainted Red Tornado, with the tunic bottom of Darkseid and the head of MOTUC Skeletor.

VM poll results and new poll

Well, Vintage Month is over and it’s time to tally up our poll results.

In answer to the question, “Which 1980s property most deserves a revamped toyline?” here’s how you voted:

  • C.O.P.S. ‘N’ Crooks: 39 votes (28%)
  • Bravestarr: 30 votes (22%)
  • Sectaurs: 29 votes (21%)
  • Inhumanoids: 26 votes (19%)
  • Captain Power: 15 votes (11%)

While I think all these lines could make for an appealing update, I can see why C.O.P.S. won: like Masters of the Universe, it has a broad range of crazy, unique character designs. And so, with any luck, Hasbro will give us a new Buttons McBoomBoom in the near future. (Man, does that name sound NSFW…)

There’s a new poll up, this time asking what new features (if any) you’d most like to see if and when Mattel re-releases MOTUC Skeletor. Note you can choose up to three options in this poll.

Questions for Matty?

mattel logoOK, you guys complained, I relented. Again. So I’ll go back to asking Matty questions. I missed the March 1 round, so my next round will go up on March 15.

Got any questions for Mattel? Post ’em below and I’ll pick a couple to ask. And be polite. I’m not going to pick any mean-spirited or whiny ones.

EDIT: OK, I picked two questions. Closing comments now. Thanks!

Vintage Month > Homer Simpson (Mattel, 1990)

Playmates’ run of Simpsons action figures back in the early years of the decade is the gold standard for toys of the show. They produced (almost) every major character from the show, and a whole heck of a lot of minor ones too. More recently, McFarlane Toys offered a different take on the license with dioramas depicting famous Simpsons moments.

But as much as I enjoyed these lines (particularly Playmates’), I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Mattel’s early effort in 1990. The short-lived line still offers the most articulated figures of the Simpsons ever made.

The sculpting isn’t as spot-on to the show as Playmates’ work, though, and the figures had an odd feature–they came with little plastic word balloons that could be plugged into a hole in the characters’ soft, hollow heads. You could swap out the cardboard cards with different sayings, and best of all, the cards were blank on the back, allowing you to write in whatever classics Simpsons bon mot you wanted. Homer’s other accessories were a radiation hood and an inanimate carbon rod.

The line included the Simpsons family, as well as a “Bartman” figure and a Nelson Muntz (who represented the typical action figure line “villain,” I guess). There was also a purple couch and TV playset. I used to have them all, then stupidly sold them sometime during college, in the early days of eBay. I’ve since picked up a Homer, and someday may try to track the rest of them down.

Congrats to MisterBigBo!

thumbs_up

As of yesterday, my good friend (and PGPoA reader) MisterBigBo and his lovely wife have a brand-new baby boy. Please join me in welcoming Itty Bitty Bo (and hopefully, a new action figure fan) to the world!

(Super) Man down!

Oh, the irony. My set of DCUC6 arrived today, and after so many problem-free DCUC figures, I was finally struck by the dreaded limb breakage. The victim? The Man of Steel, of all people. Be warned, the following images are not for the faint of heart! (more…)

Vintage Month > Vintage Reviews

This is your one-stop shop for all my reviews of vintage (that is, pre-1995 or so) toys. I’ll continue to add to it as I write new reviews over the course of the month. (more…)

January poll results

The “Which character would you most want as this year’s MOTUC SDCC exclusive?” poll is now closed. Here are the final results:

  • The Sorceress (w/ Zoar) – 67 votes
  • He-Ro – 47 votes
  • Fearless Photog – 29 votes
  • Megator – 10 votes
  • Tytus – 4 votes

In retrospect, perhaps I shouldn’t have had the Sorceress on that list–she’s a shoo-in for the line, if it lasts long enough. I’m not suprised He-Ro is number two, and I’m impressed Fearless Photog managed to come in third. Megator, on the other hand, has disappointed me.

The February poll is up now–it’s about what 1980s toy properties you’d like to see redone for today’s collectors, like G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary or MOTUC. I skipped the most obvious properties, like Thundercats and Silverhawks, because I wanted people to have to actually think about who they want to vote for.

February is Vintage Month at PGPoA!

Maxx Steele(First off, if you’re not seeing some noticeable tweaks to the site design, be sure to hit “refresh” on your browser.)

Welcome to Vintage Month at PGPoA! All this month, I’ll be highlighting toys from my youth and beyond. Some you may be very familiar with, others may be long-lost gems.

The idea comes from something we sometimes do at OAFE, though we call it “Retro Month” there. For the first Retro Month, we had this great 1980s Miami Vice look based off on the then-popular GTA: Vice City game. I decided to go with an 8-bit NES look this time around.

If there are any specific toy lines or random 1980s toys you’d like to see a post about, let me know below and I’ll see what I can do.

Thanks to Red Kryptonite and OB1 for the redesign work!

What the Hawk, man?

He's mad at his editorsI recently became interested in Hawkman due to his great-looking DCUC figure, much as I became interested in Deathstroke last year for the same reason. As a result, I’ve started looking into the character. And holy shit, is his continuity a mess.

And I once thought Marvel had ruined Wolverine’s history. As much as I hate stuff like the bone claws, at least Wolverine doesn’t have three or four other versions of him that may or may not exist at any given time running around the canonical universe.

I think I’ve managed to get a grip on Hawkman’s continuity as it stands right now, though. Here’s the timeline I’ve put together. Feel free to correct me on any inaccuracies, as I’m sure there are many. (more…)
