1.) Extremely nerdy question: Now that we’re getting a He-Man/Superman 2-pack at retail, does that mean the events of DC Comics Presents #47 are canon in the MOTUC universe–or is this a “What If?” scenario?

There actually isn’t an official 100% canon for MOTU. Each tale, whether told in a movie, TV series, comic book, toy bio or your imagination is its own story and equally valid. [Poe’s note — I was asking whether this story was canon in the specific MOTUC canon they’re building in the bios.]

2.) Is there any chance of other DC/MOTU collaborations now–perhaps a trade paperback reissue of the original DC 3-issue MOTU miniseries, or even a new MOTUC comic series? (more…)

Review > Castle Grayskull Stands (Masters of the Universe Classics, Mattel)

While everyone knew Trap Jaw and Battle Cat were going to be same-day (and as it turned out, same-hour) sell-outs, the vanishing of the Grayskull stands was something of a surprise. Of course, they are much better stands than the boring translucent blue ovals for DCUC and JLU that have been sitting on Mattycollector.com for more than a year.

While Mattel has already confirmed that Trap Jaw and Battle Cat will go back into production (and perhaps already have), on the question of a second run of stands Mattel’s rep ToyGuru wrote, “We don’t have confirmed plans right now, but with the quick sell out we will look into it.” I imagine Mattel may have been even more surprised than the fans by the sell-out, given the poor performance of the DCUC/JLU stands. If I had to guess, though, I imagine the stands will be back by the end of the year. (more…)

Review > Trap Jaw (Masters of the Universe Classics, Mattel)

Trap Jaw is easily one of the most popular and iconic Masters of the Universe characters. In a line where the star was a fairly plain-looking (if incredibly muscular) barbarian hero, Trap Jaw stood out as a multicolored monstrosity, wielding a robotic arm with three, count em, three different attachments—a gun, a hook, and a clamp—and even having an articulated jaw. The swiveling action of the attachments and the jaw gave the 1980s Trap Jaw two additional points of articulation beyond the MOTU standard.

Like many aspects of MOTU, Trap Jaw may have borrowed from Mattel’s 1970s “Big Jim” line. But rather than being a straight repaint of a Big Jim toy (a la Battle Cat or Zoar), Trap Jaw quite possibly owed his inspiration to the Big Jim figure Iron Jaw (who may never have gotten past the prototype stage). Both characters, however, may have been partly inspired by the James Bond villain “Jaws” from The Spy Who Loved Me. Of course, aside from Roger Sweet writing in his book that Jaws was an inspiration for Trap Jaw, most of this is speculation…but there’s no question Iron Jaw and Trap Jaw look an awful lot alike. Gygor – 100% new tooling confirmed

Though I’d heard Gygor was completely new tooling and not a DCUC Gorilla Grodd re-use, I wasn’t sure and wanted to get it straight from the (Four) Horse(men)’s mouth. So I did.

Gy-Gor is indeed 100% new tooling. He’s much larger than Grodd, so none of Grodd’s tooled parts could be used to create him.

So there you have it. As I suspected, the similarities between Grodd and Gygor–and Cy-Gor II, for that matter–are simply due to stylistic similarities in the way the Horsemen sculpt gorillas.

The question is, did Shane Dittsworth–the Fifth Horseman–sculpt Gygor’s crotch?

Gygor Attacks!

You’ll see this guy start showing up in the “Post a Comment!” rotation pretty soon, but MechaShiva came through on this guy with such badassery I just had to offer you a larger version. (Click the image to see it.)

Of all the 2010 MOTU figures, I think I’m most excited about Gygor. Ask anyone–I love war apes! Cy-Gor, Kriegaffe, Gorilla Grodd, Code Red…but Gygor may just take the cake. I mean, he’s yellow and green, covered in black armor, wears a red cape and wields a wicked-looking axe…the only thing I’m more sure of than this guy’s awesomeness is that he’ll sell out before my order goes through in September.

Life-sized Land Shark makes us afraid to go back on the highway

ToyFare contributor, Poester and vintage toys superfan Ben Leach pointed me to this post at Lounge Grayskull, featuring photos of a full-size, real-life Land Shark from Masters of the Universe, which is being restored to unholy life by Unique Movie Cars Las Vegas.

Says the poster:

The reason I am posting this is because I own and I am restoring a full size Landshark.I have check the movie they made in the 80’s and in was not in it.Does anybody know why mattel built this or what it was use for.I have posted a pic so everyone can see it. Any help would be great thanks…. YES THE MOUTH MOVES WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING

The fact that the mouth moves while driving is easily the most insanely awesome thing ever to be featured on a car, and yes, that includes the soothing voice of William Daniels. The most insanely pimped-out hydraulics-propelled gangsta car imaginable holds nothing on a giant purple chomping shark-car.

But there’s still a mystery here–when was this built, and why? Anyone know? UMC seems pretty sure Mattel commissioned it.

Custom MOTUC Castle Grayskull update

Last year I posted some images of Joe Amaro’s awesome MOTUC-scale Castle Grayskull, which will forever remain unequestionably more awesome than anything Mattel would ever spend the money to make.

Joe, who now handles product development for Jazwares and helped create the great 3″ Sonic figures, sent me an email to show an updated image of the castle based on the original box art, created with help from super He-Fan (and sometimes Poester) Baena. Check it out (click for desktop-size version):

Here’s the original box art for comparison (via Grayskull Museum):

Questions:

  • So, I guess Skeletor achieved his lifelong dream of capturing Castle Grayskull?
  • And Beast Man achieved his lifelong dream of nutting up, leaving his abusive relationship with Skullhead and joining up with the good guys?

Evil Tyrant Lizard King

Good lord.

I just had a thought.

We’re already getting Tytus and Gygor, and Panthor and Megator are sure bets. Tytus’s bio mentions dinosaurs with techno parts. Does that mean we could get…Tyrantisaurus?!

My nerdgasm for such a thing would be visible from space. I had the original Tyrantisaurus as a kid, and it was one of my favorite toys (though I did eventually repaint him into Devil Dinosaur). I’d be in no matter what he cost…as long as he’s not a repaint of this guy:
