New DCUC figure revealed

Man, busy day here on PGPoA. For those of you who get these missives via an RSS feed, I apologize for all the new items–but this couldn’t wait.

The New York Comic Con is this weekend, and Mattel has been hinting that they’ll be revealing all sorts of DC-related goodness at their Saturday panel. But to get the ball rolling, they’ve sent some photos to Action Figure Insider of the latest addition to the DCUC ranks–Lightray! Click on the pic for the full article and more photos.

My thoughts: Mattel continues to intrigue me with its DCUC characters choices. As a big Jack Kirby fan, I have no complaints about getting another action figure of a New God. Perhaps this is the SDCC exclusive, rumored to be an alien?

As always, the Four Horsemen’s sculpting and paint work look amazing. But I found it a bit amusing AFI’s article states, “This has been a good year for Lightray”–since he just got killed off in the comics. Fortunately, this is comics, so he should be back in a month or two. A year, tops.

Ask Mattel > 4/2/08

We’re back with another round of questions for Mattel’s “ToyGuru.” (I tried to think of a particularly nerdy question for Paul to mock, but I kept coming up blank.)

PG: The second wave of DC Universe Classics appeared at Targets across the country several weeks earlier than they arrived at other retailers, including online retailers. Was this a one-time occurrence, or should those who pre-order the figures from online retailers generally expect to receive their figures some time after they appear at retail? (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > Horatio Caine edition

Shades of JusticeODD: That’s right, Poe’s guiltiest pleasure of all, CSI Miami, is back, baby! Since I watched pretty much every episode on A&E last summer, I’ve only had new episodes to slake my thirst, and what with the writer’s strike I’ve been deprived of the pithy statements of Horatio Caine for months. But as we all know, “Here in Miami, we…never…close.” (cue Roger Daltrey scream)

PG: Pre-sale photos of Deathstroke have shown a machine gun, a sword and sheath, a staff and a removable pistol in a holster. Will the retail figure come with all these accessories, and if so, why the bevy of goodies for ol’ Slade?

Mattel’s “ToyGuru”: Yes! Slade in both his standard and chase version will have a staff, which clips to his back, a pistol that fits in his holster, a sword in his sheath and a machine gun with a strap. Why so many accessories–It is friggin’ Deathstroke!!! Why not? (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > Ennui Edition

ODD: With what seems like surprising rapidity (given my past experience with such projects), tomorrow will see the debut of a brand-new PGPoA webcomic, The Toybox, written by yours truly and drawn by Red Kryptonite, the talented artist responsible for the graphics on this site. You can expect to see a new Toybox every other Wednesday. (more…)

DCUC Wave 2 Sneak Peek

Captain Collector over on AFTimes has used his magical networking powers to score a full set of DCUC wave 2–and they look great.

DCUC Wave 2

I’m particularly pleased to see Grodd isn’t nearly as tall as I was thought he would be. That’s pretty much in line with his size in the comics (I’ve got a whole Poe’s Point planned on the topic of oversized gorillas in fiction). Check out the link and enjoy the pics.

Odds ‘n Ends > TGFO Edition

The long purgatory of February (broken up in the middle by the bright gleam of my beloved fianceé’s birthday, of course) is over at long last, and we here in New England can finally start looking forward to a dreary, wet March…and maybe the second wave of DCUC, dammit.

ODD: Again, please give a warm welcome to PGPoA’s three exceptional new correspondents: Paul, PrktTear, and Pete. In honor of the incidental alliteration, I’ve dubbed them the PGPoA Power Pals. Moving forward, I think all future correspondents are going to have to pick a handle that starts with “P.” (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > One-Twelfth Scale Edition

Batman and the Six-Inch Outsiders

ODD: That’s a photo of the action figures currently occupying the place of honor at the side of my desk. I decided I wanted to put together a display with one representative from all the one-twelfth (one foot=one inch) scale figure lines I own. (more…)
