After my Saturday morning cartoons post, I decided to go ahead and compile a list of my top ten cartoons of all time. This list is unrestrained by timeslot or, I should mention, relative quality. I make no claim as to this list representing what I think are the best cartoons ever made. That list would be quite different. Today’s list is about the cartoons that have made a significant impact on me or my life at some point.

Anyone who knows me at all no doubt can guess #1 right now, but we’re going to start at number ten.

Odds ‘n Ends > Spiffy Edition

ODD: As mentioned yesterday, we did a little sprucing up here at PGPoA. If you’re curious who the bear in the menu is, don’t worry–she’ll be showing up in The Toybox soon. And has anyone figured out who the “Comics” guy is? If not, you’ll find out if you pick up Toyfare #130 in a week or two.

END: My review of DCUC wave two was over 4,000 words long, so I’m just curious–how many people actually read the whole thing? I’m thinking I may be writing way too much for the attention span of your average websurfer. (more…)

Quick update

I’ll have a (much) larger post up later today, but before that, just a few quick site-related updates.

First off, as you may have noticed, OB1 and I made some minor tweaks to the site over the weekend. We revamped the colors, making them more vibrant and adding a fade (like a ’90s rapper, yo) at the top. It’s a minor change that I think gives the site a crisper, more professional look.

We also added two new menu items, one for the Toybox (featuring a character who will be introduced soon) and one for comics. Anyone recognize the action figure for Comics? We’ve also made the menu images a bit larger, to showcase Red Kryptonite’s great art.

Finally, according to Dreamhost, the loading problems should be subsiding over the next couple of days. Fingers crossed that actually happens.

Comic > Batman vs. Predator: Old Scores #1

I thought I’d give a non-humorous figure comic a try. I’m hoping/planning to make more–I have an idea for a whole storyline.

For the purposes of this comic, the only “canonical” texts are the first Predator film and the first Batman vs. Predator miniseries–all other comics and movies involving the Predator are ignored. As for when it’s supposed to take place in DC continuity–I don’t really care. By including the miniseries as history I’ve already placed it outside the DC canon anyway.

On the Menu > Oculus Orbus

Oculus OrbusMaybe it’s just the nostalgia talking, but it seems to me that the 1980s was a great time for the odd, eccentric toy. From Food Fighters to Barnyard Commandos to Army Ants to Boglins, the ’80s were a boon for fans of original license action figures.

But also in the ’80s, in a trend that continues to this day, electronic forms of entertainment (from videogames and computers to cell phones and Ipods) began to supplant action figures and diecast cars, just as those toys had supplanted the wooden treasures of old.

PGPoA’s site menu (with images created by the incomparable Red Kryptonite) pays tribute to several of those toys whose popularity was obscured by the mega-lines such as Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Masters of the Universe. But there were a few toys that managed to break out into the public consciousness as well. One such toy line was Madballs.

Ask Mattel > 4/2/08

We’re back with another round of questions for Mattel’s “ToyGuru.” (I tried to think of a particularly nerdy question for Paul to mock, but I kept coming up blank.)

PG: The second wave of DC Universe Classics appeared at Targets across the country several weeks earlier than they arrived at other retailers, including online retailers. Was this a one-time occurrence, or should those who pre-order the figures from online retailers generally expect to receive their figures some time after they appear at retail? (more…)

Rick is a sad panda.

No Odds ‘n Ends today. I was planning on doing some clever April 1 gag for the site, but I found my enthusiasm waned when I discovered someone had stolen my case of DCUC2 after it was delivered by UPS. The tracking page claims it was delivered yesterday at 7:53 PM, yet there was nothing in the little airlock of my apartment building where the packages usually are.

OK, well, maybe it wasn’t stolen–maybe UPS just delivered it to the wrong address, I don’t know. Postpeople mix up the apartments in my building all the time, so it’s possible some Samaritan who took it by accident will come by and drop the box off today or tomorrow…but whatever. I’ve waited way too long for this not to to be unbelievably pissed off. I plan to bug the crap out of UPS today…if only to make myself feel a little better by making some poor phone-farm schmuck’s life more difficult.
