Mattel SDCC Exclusives Thread (updated)
Reveal going on right now on Attack of the Show. Discuss.
All righty. So here are the SDCC exclusives fully revealed tonight. (Part II will be aired on the 15th.) (more…)
Real Ghostbusters, Mego-style
So the news has already gone around this weekend–a promo for tonight’s Attack of the Show (which is scheduled to showcase the Mattel SDCC exclusives on tonight and the 15th in two split segments–dates subject to change, of course) revealed a new addition to the Retro Action line: the Ghostbusters, Real-style. (I traced the news back through Infinite Hollywood back to this post on a Mego collector site–go there to see more and larger pics.)
Evidently the figures will have a talking feature, which is pretty neat…though I wonder if it will be so old-fashioned as to have a pull string. As for the idea of Mego Ghostbusters figures? Well, the cartoonish look of the characters definitely fits the Mego style better than, say, Lost. So while I imagine Real Ghostbusters fans are hoping for 6″ Movie Masters-style figures at some point, these look pretty good.
That said, there are some issues to consider. Peter’s uniform on the cartoon was brown, not beige, though maybe this has something to do with the fact that it’s an SDCC exclusive. And will the voice be Lorenzo Music or Dave Coulier? Does it matter?
The only Mego-style figures that could tempt me would be Retro Action MOTU, and maybe Diamond’s upcoming Universal Monsters. However, while I’ve been pretty critical of a lot of the Mego revival stuff so far, this seems like a great use of the style.

Toy Aisle Trolls > One-Face

Toy Aisle Trolls is a feature highlighting acts of vandalism to in-store toy items. If you find a ruined package, a stolen figure, a swapped-out figure, or any other such acts, take a photo (cell phone photos are fine if they’re not blurry) and email them to poe AT poeghostal.com. Also, please note: I’m deliberately being over-the-top with my condemnation of these people–I don’t actually wish bodily harm upon them. Just severe mental anguish.
OK…I hate to admit it, but this one’s kind of funny. (more…)
Batman: Arkham Asylum figures coming from DC Direct

OK, so when it comes to videogame-based figures, DC Direct isn’t exactly gaining a reputation for striking when the iron is hot (their Mass Effect 2 figures are due out in August, while their God of War line drops in November). But still, the news that we’re getting an action figure line based on Batman: Arkham Asylum should make many a geek dance around in their vintage Underoos with joy.
From the Previews description for ToyFare #156, due out in June:
Heads up, game boys and virtual girls. The only thing better than toys and video games are toys based on video games, and ToyFare #156 is packed with all three! Get ready for the sequel to the best comic book video game of all time as we go inside DC Direct’s red-hot new toy line based on Batman: Askham Asylum. New figures will make their world debut and Arkham Asylum Batman will appear on one of our covers.
Incidentally, am I just way behind the curve on this? Was this announced at Toy Fair or something and I just spaced? Thanks to ActionFigurePics for the heads-up.

Most Wanted > Mark V Master Chief

I’ve never enjoyed a first-person shooter more than I did the original Halo (full disclosure: I’ve never played Half-Life or its sequel). The sequels were OK, but they never made me feel the same magic I felt whenever I played the first game–where I could knock out a Marine, swipe his sniper rifle, hijack a Banshee and fly to some hard-to-reach outcropping and snipe every single bad guy from half a mile away. Or maybe just kill everything with the pistol.
So it annoys me that while McFarlane has given us several Spartans in Mark V armor, including this Target-exclusive eyesore, we’ve yet to get a Mark V Spartan in green armor. It doesn’t even have to be the Master Chief per se–since I think McFarlane’s license doesn’t extend to the first Halo–but why not a regular Spartan in green Mark V armor? That’s all I ask. I don’t even collect McFarlane’s Halo stuff, but I want this one figure. Preferably with the original pistol.
Until they make one, I guess I’m stuck with my huge, but still kind of cool, Joyride figure.
