According to a poster on He-Man.org, Mattel filed for the trademarks to Optikk, Tytus, and Megator this month. (It should be noted that ToyGuru has said that Mattel now files for all sorts of trademarks to hide which characters they’re actually making. Ah, the perils of the Information Age.)
I’ve long hoped Optikk would be the first NA figure in MOTUC. But since his design was so unique, I’ve been trying to figure out how they’d make him using existing MOTUC parts. Here’s my guess:
- Head – new sculpt
- Armor – new sculpt
- Chest: generic heroic (hidden by armor)
- Shoulders, biceps and hands: Trap-Jaw/Kronis
- Forearms: Trap-Jaw, possibly some new tooling
- Crotch: He-Ro
- Thighs: Trap-Jaw, possibly some new tooling
- Calves and boots: He-Ro

I forgot to mention this last week–I wrote the cover story for this month’s issue of ToyFare. Yes, I ventured into the world of both Twilight and dolls, and escaped with my masculinity intact.
In all seriousness, it was a lot of fun. The issue also features an awesome Inhumanoids retrospective by ’80s toy guru and occasional Poester Ben Leach.
ToyFare #148 is available in comic shops now and will hit newsstands next week.

I went back and forth on whether to post this, because the anti-Mattel ranting and general negativity around here lately has, well, made running this blog not very enjoyable as of late. But then I remembered part of my original mission statement for this blog (in my head, anyway) was to provide commentary on aspects of the industry that don’t show up on the news sites and so forth. And so, as the Joker might say, here…we…go. (more…)

“Minnie” Princess Leia by bratislabat

Poe’s note: You know, the phrase “abomination against nature” gets thrown around a lot these days…

There are countless reasons why I will purchase just about any Minimate product that comes out, but the customize-ability’ of the figures ranks high among those reasons. So it was with great curiosity that I first read about Luke’s Toy Store‘s set of Ninja Decals for Minimates. Then, after reading Poe’s review, it was great excitement that I awaited Luke’s second set of store exclusive decals: Gruesome Ghosts. Luke Porter was gracious enough to provide not only a decal package but also a set of six figures to review. (more…)

So…Mattel and Digital River struck again yesterday. I thought everything was fine and all set. I was wrong.
At 3:45pm EDT I received an email saying Mattel/DR “were unable to renew [my] subscription due to a credit card authorization failure.” Sure, that made perfect sense since the orders for Webstor went through fine last month on the exact same card. (more…)
