ToyFare #130

I’m currently working on an article for an upcoming issue of ToyFare, but I thought I’d take a few minutes to peruse the latest issue.

Cover: For some reason, Harrison Ford’s face seems to be difficult to sculpt (much like Bruce Campbell), but the larger the format, the easier it appears to be–and Sideshow nailed it with their Premium Format Indy here.

Customizing 101: I’ve never been clear on the whole “Sucklord” thing. How can he sell action figures made from molds of real Star Wars figures? This is one of those underground things I’ve never looked into, like the Church of the Subgenius. Still, that figure’s cool.

Hot Plate: “Aquaman the A-Lister…I like the sound of that.”

Page 16-17: Most of the figures on these pages are cool, but the only one I’m positively getting is the Wendigo–whom ever time I think of, I hear the goofy voice from the early-90s X-Men arcade game screaming “Weeeendiiiiigoooooooo!!!” (more…)

Odds ‘n Ends > Farked Edition

ODD: The big news today is that yesterday, unbeknownst to me, my Spider-man 3 post was linked to on Fark (specifically, in the Geek section). To understand what that means, yesterday PGPoA received 300% more visitors than an average day. Pretty awesome. My immense thanks to the anonymous person who submitted it!

END: If anyone is going to the New York Comic Con this weekend and might be willing to pick up a particular exclusive for me, please shoot me an email. (more…)

New DCUC figure revealed

Man, busy day here on PGPoA. For those of you who get these missives via an RSS feed, I apologize for all the new items–but this couldn’t wait.

The New York Comic Con is this weekend, and Mattel has been hinting that they’ll be revealing all sorts of DC-related goodness at their Saturday panel. But to get the ball rolling, they’ve sent some photos to Action Figure Insider of the latest addition to the DCUC ranks–Lightray! Click on the pic for the full article and more photos.

My thoughts: Mattel continues to intrigue me with its DCUC characters choices. As a big Jack Kirby fan, I have no complaints about getting another action figure of a New God. Perhaps this is the SDCC exclusive, rumored to be an alien?

As always, the Four Horsemen’s sculpting and paint work look amazing. But I found it a bit amusing AFI’s article states, “This has been a good year for Lightray”–since he just got killed off in the comics. Fortunately, this is comics, so he should be back in a month or two. A year, tops.

20 Things I Learned While Watching Spider-Man 3

Mrs. Ghostal-to-Be and I had some people over on Saturday night (including the lovely Ms. Kryptonite) to watch the Rifftrax of Spider-Man 3, and someone reminded me of this list I posted on my other blog last year. Here it is again, for the enjoyment of the PGPoA faithful.

Twenty things I learned while watching Spider-man 3:

1.) Extended jazz dance sequences are best left to actual musicals.

2.) To become evil/cool, all one has to do is style one’s hair like Pete Wentz and not get enough sleep.

3.) Evil/cool people walk down the street doing that “guns pointing at you” hand gesture, which means Dave Coulier is evil/cool (well, that’s half right).

4.) Being assertive and exposing frauds are the actions of an evil person.

5.) Topher Grace not only looks more like the comic Peter Parker, but he can actually crack one-liners, and I think he might have made a better Spider-Man. (more…)

Star Wars and G.I. Joe Round Up: A Big Week

Paul here again with another catch up on the week’s events in the G.I. Joe and Star Wars toy worlds. This last week was actually exciting compared to the previous few weeks of news drought.

Star Wars

The big thing this week (and perhaps one of the biggest events in Star Wars toy collecting history) was the leak of images of the long rumored Millennium Falcon redo. The pictures appeared on Galactic Hunter.com and sent Star Wars message boards on fire. Why all the commotion? This thing is two and one half feet long and has a long, long list of features.

gijoequestions.jpg

Ironically, the image appeared after Hasbro had stated that the images of the Falcon that has surfaced before were all fakes. This thing hasn’t been confirmed by Hasbro yet, so I’m still trying to maintain my loose grip on sanity.

Another vehicle came under the radar to hit Toys R Us shelves this week in the midst of all the Falcon hubbub. It’s a white colored large winged TIE fighter, to better match the vintage TIEs and the ones seen in the first Star Wars film. And by first Star Wars film, I mean the good one and if you don’t know which first one is the good one then I feel sorry for you.

G.I. Joe

While G.I. Joe news wasn’t as big, it was pretty notable. Wave 5 images of the 2008 Joe releases came out on the G.I. Joe Club’s website. Head on over there and check them out, because this is a great wave. The figures are Hawk, Bazooka, Barbecue, B.A.T., Snow Serpent, and a black Storm Shadow. Barbecue and the B.A.T. seem like the stand out figures is this batch and probably the two that will be the hardest to find.

There was also a round of questions Hasbro answered related to the line. While the answers were posted all across the ‘net, you can find my take on the best ones on Toy Bender.com (my site) or look around your favorite Joe sites for the answers. Good luck if you go that route, they’re all over the place!

Driven batty

Got a few spare minutes here, thought I’d post…just for fun, really.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I tend to prefer a single action figure of a character in his “iconic” look, rather than a number of costume variations. This is because I view my toys not as collectibles but as characters, and to have two Batmen next to each other, well, it breaks the illusion that he’s Batman and not just a toy. (more…)

New haulage from the Magic TRU

I’m a tad behind on the next installment of Batman vs. Predator: If It Bleeds (the art is done, but I still need to add the dialogue), so in lieu of that, I thought I’d post this little post showcasing my haul from the Magic Toys ‘R Us last night. (Yes Paul, it came through with the Snake Eyes.) By the way, don’t forget to vote in the poll about the message board (it’s on the left below the menu).

Poe’s Point > Top Ten Cartoons of all time…EVER.

NOTE: Originally published on Biggerboat on 2/16/2007.

After my Saturday morning cartoons post, I decided to go ahead and compile a list of my top ten cartoons of all time. This list is unrestrained by timeslot or, I should mention, relative quality. I make no claim as to this list representing what I think are the best cartoons ever made. That list would be quite different. Today’s list is about the cartoons that have made a significant impact on me or my life at some point.

Anyone who knows me at all no doubt can guess #1 right now, but we’re going to start at number ten.
