Poe Plays Favorites 2009 (The Awards Post)

Has it been a whole year already? I feel like I wrote last year’s PPF just yesterday. Anyway, welcome to the second annual awards post here at PGPoA. As you may recall, the way this works is I select my awards solely from figures I reviewed. So while there were obvious eye-popping examples of action figure design this year–the deluxe Hot Toys Joker comes to mind–you won’t see them here, because I didn’t buy them.

On to the awards! (more…)

Paul’s Peg > New Joe Card Art?

How’s this for total speculation? Here’s some possible new G.I. Joe card art that surfaced on 4chan.

Now the only reason I’m posting this here is that I would totally dig this art. I’m guessing that it’s probably a fake, but who knows? I really would love to see the return of a more classic card out, since I’ve never liked the Rise of Cobra stuff. I don’t expect a return to the look of the 25th anniversary style, but dang it all, I miss it. This is a nice middle ground that might catch my eye a bit more as I’m looking for toys I can’t afford. What do kids think?

Review > King Randor (Masters of the Universe Classics)

The original Masters of the Universe toy line went through a mere six waves from 1982-1987 (OK, seven if you count the two “Laser Light” figures that were never released in the U.S.). The last wave offered a much more diverse assortment of characters than the previous waves, from Scareglow to King Hiss to Snake Face to, well, Gwildor. And it also finally gaves MOTU fans a figure of one of the prominent characters in the cartoon series: Prince Adam’s dad, King Randor.

Of course, King Randor goes as far back as the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Bible, written by Michael Halperin in 1982 before the cartoon was even created. He’s appeared since then in every incarnation of the He-Man story, including the New Adventures (where, in the first episode, he and his wife Marlena finally found out the truth about their son Adam).

Since those early days, Randor’s history has been greatly expanded. We now know that Skeletor was once in fact Keldor, Randor’s half-brother, and that Skeletor’s facial deformity is a result of a battle with Randor. (Keldor may even be the true ruler of Eternia by birth, but the Elders rather understandably interceded with the right of succession). (more…)

Custom MOTUC Eldor

Probably my #1 most-desired obscure MOTU character I’d like to see in MOTUC is Eldor, the old wizard who served as He-Ro’s mentor. Like He-Ro, a prototype of the figure was made but never produced.

Due to his unusual design–the coat and the cowl–many fans, including me, have wondered how Mattel and the Horsemen could pull it off and still keep the new tooling to a minimum. However, thanks to customizer Hunter Knight, we now have an example. While there’s some extra sculpting on this figure I suspect might be too expensive for MOTUC–the boot jewels for sure, and perhaps the belt–and a MOTUC version would have a sculpted cowl instead of a cloth one, I think this shows a MOTUC Eldor is quite possible.

Joes For Tots > Sponsorship Spotlight: Articulated Discussion

Banner2

Yeah, I know Christmas is over. There are still awesomeness to be had with our sponsors though and believe it or not, Toys For Tots still needs help. Today’s Sponsorship Spotlight is a bit different considering our sponsor today is not a store, rather its a super awesome blog. Maybe not *as* super awesome as PoeGhostal.com, but pretty super awesome in it’s own right.

I started reading Articulated Discussion since almost its inception and I’ve been hooked ever since. That’s why I’m happy that AD decided to sponsor the Joes For Tots contest with the addition of a Back to the Future electronic DeLorean. What else can you expect from them? Hit the more tag to find out!
