Review > Arkham Asylum Batman (Play Arts KAI, Square Enix)

The Arkham series of videogames is my favorite take on Batman since The Animated Series. Yes, I even like it more than the Nolan films, which are great but are bit too grounded in the real world to really feel entirely like Batman to me. Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City straddle the line between the grim and gritty realism of The Dark Knight Returns and the Dark Knight Trilogy while still giving us all the “unrealistic” villains like Mr. Freeze, Clayface and even Solomon Grundy.

Both Mattel and DC Collectibles has tried their hand at Arkham-based action figures. Mattel inexplicably allowed someone other than the Four Horsemen to sculpt Batman and several of the other figures, made them all out of scale with DCUC and half of them out of scale with each other, and gave them middling-to-bad articulation. DC Collectibles’ offerings have great sculpting but minimal articulation (although the upcoming Series 4 does appear to finally have ball-and-hinge hips).

So – where can one turn to for fully-articulated action figures based on the Arkham games? For now, the answer is Japan-based company Square Enix and their Play Arts KAI line. (more…)

Sightings > Vintage Castle Grayskullman Custom by Hunter Knight Customs

I knew someone had to have made a custom of a vintage Castle Grayskullman (aside from the creator of CGM himself), and a cursory search brought up this one by Hunter Knight Customs. I think CGM is the 30th Anniversary figure that most seems like it would have existed in the 1980s – yes, even more than Draego-Man, who, awesome as he is, seems a bit more like something Remco would have produced in one of their high-quality knockoff lines, since they focused a lot more on the dragons and dinosaurs.

Toy Aisle Trolls > Fled Arrow II

Toy Aisle Trolls is a feature highlighting acts of vandalism to in-store toy items. If you find a ruined package, a stolen figure, a swapped-out figure, or any other such acts, take a photo (cell phone photos are fine if they’re not blurry) and email them to poe@poeghostal.com.

Poe’s Note: The first “Fled Arrow” was just about a month ago. This douche ups the ante by swiping TWO Arrows, making the “II” in the title even more deliciously appropriate.

Speaking of my terrible pun, does anyone remember the movie Fled? Remember how they actually said “We gotta fled” in that movie? Wasn’t that really weird?

Happy Castle Grayskullman Day!

Look, I get people think this site is rife with negativity regarding MOTUC, at least in the comments. But the truth is I still love MOTU and MOTUC – I’m just not the obsessed person I was a couple years ago. This always happens with me – I go through fads. I’m in more of a Godzilla mood lately, but I’m sure MOTU (and/or Batman, or Hellboy, or whatever) will come back around at some point.

All of which is to say, Castle Grayskullman is pretty awesome and goes on sale today. What’s his appeal? I think it’s that he feels both brand-new and a perfect throwback to the days of MOTU yore.

Anyway, CGM is on sale today, along with Filmation King Randor (which I’m actually rather excited about – always wanted this as a kid), Dekker (whom, I must confess, is a bit of an afterthought for me), the Club Infinite Earths Uncle Sam and John Constantine, and Courtroom Peter Venkman and Ray Stanz.

All-in-one sale page is here. And as you face the White Screen of Doom, may the odds be ever in your favor!
