I’ve managed not to get into the whole Minimate thing thus far–I’m nearly broke paying for what I already collect–but Rustin Parr was pushing them hard when I met with him this past weekend (it was quite fun time, also attended by Poesters PrkftTear, Ed, and the soon-to-be-famous-author Red Kryptonite). I’ve even received emails from readers (well, one email from one reader) asking for more Minimate coverage here on the site. Anyway, when I came across this news, I had to post it.
Diamond Select is going to be offering this cool Laboratory Playset, designed to work for pretty much any Minimate set from Marvel to Battlestar Galactica to even Ghostbusters. It even comes with an armed guard and an as-yet-unnamed animal Minimate, and can be reconfigured to work with standard 3 ¾” figures.
So yeah–awesome. Have they announced a Minimate Ecto-1 yet? I may not be able to resist it.

I just hope they don't try to resurrect C3 for it. . . the Batmobile (full sized) and Batplane were great, the Batcave much less so.

Yeah…the batcave was…not so good at staying in one piece. I had to superglue mine together.
Everything else in C3 was pretty tits though. Specially the larger Batmobile.
As for this…I've been dying for a minimate diorama and this looks generic and cool enough that it could be anything from the Watchtower to the Baxter Building to Thunderbolts mountain.
In short, WIN.

Minimates having taken my love for Lego and put extra articulation on the figures may be the single most awesome thing in the entire history of humankind – I mean fuck the moonlanding or the invention of penicilin (no more Clap for me!) this is it – the very pinnacle of our civilisation.
And yet……that "playset" looks like a couple of cheap carboard boxes papered together and pretty much anyone could make this themselves……. in fact I may do that and save some coin.
finkrod
Gotta agree with Motorthing, that playset looks like something you'd buy from Ikea to put your shoes in. Maybe it'd look a bit more zazzy if you threw in some control panels or some other kind of funiture.
americanhyena
As soon as you mentioned that, Finkrod I realized that I actually *have* a spare batcave that I never built…and it's chock full of all those things! 😀

Hey, I love cardboard playsets. Better with a plastic base and a cardboard backdrop, but completely cardboard playsets are also cool.

Looks kind of spiffy but it'll probably be over priced for what it is.
I like that it can be converted to work with 3 3/4" figures.

Minimates Playset = LEGOs.
That is kinda cool, but I wish it were made of a sturdy plastic. You could still print on the details and it would be more stable.
Monte
I detest the use of cardboard for any playset. I think it's inexcusable, frankly.
That said, their heart is definitely in the right place.

I donno, I think it looks pretty cool. It might be useful to me to display my Transformers Robot Heroes. We'll see how much it is tho! 😉
Wes
I rather like it! As long as it's cheap, a cardboard playset sounds pretty cool to me… particularly if it can be folded so that I can fit it into my lightbox. 🙂
Deadpool
That was MY one email… thanks Poe! 🙂
Anyway, I think it looks pretty good. I wanna see more about it before judging the quality. I don't think DST would be dumb enough to make it too flimsy to hold minimates.
Fengschwing
Looks sweet and I like the fact it converts to a bigger set but it does look a bit cardboardy. If it was cheap, I'd pick it up.
I liked C3, my Batcave managed to stay together really well, despite mauling from my 5 and 3 year olds. The Bat-bike and glider were pretty cool too.
Frowny McBeard
OK, I guess I'm being a little hard on C3. . . I am glad I managed to track down the Mini-Javelin (though I refuse to say what I paid) so I could have the Big 7. But really, the Mini-Flyers sucked. Except maybe the Riddler's.

If this is cheap, it is so mine! It looks awesome, particularly for figure comics.
