Show and Tell > Thud Butt (Hook)

Wow. Today’s Show and Tell is a doctoral dissertation on the action figure of Thud Butt from Hook. It’s written by Ben Leach, vintage toy enthusiast and frequent contributor to ToyFare magazine. It’s fair to say you have never loved a toy as much as Ben loves Thud Butt. Not ever.

So prepare to learn more than you ever thought possible about…Thud Butt.

One of these days, hopefully sooner than later, something is going to happen to make me realize there’s so much more to life than nostalgia and action figures.Today is not that day.

When I was a wee lad of 8 years of age, a movie came out that got me very excited. It combined action, adventure, comedy, mermaids, the ability to fly, prostitutes playing fairies, a short guy playing a tall guy, and a girl with freaky-ass caterpillar eyebrows.

It was called Hook.’ Actually, it is still called Hook.’Hook’ is one of those movies where I was so glad I saw it as a kid. I know most adults who lack the power of IMAGINATION view the movie as screwing up a classic fairy tale. But when you’re a kid, you just think it’s so cool to see Peter Pan realize who he is to venture back to Neverland to save his children. Kids in the film were beating up on pirates with the aid of marbles, chickens, mirrors, and an expensive but essentially useless raft that served as five seconds of eye candy. Plus, I was too young to get annoyed with Robin Williams’ whole shtick. Look at the funny man who makes funny faces and slight variations on one funny voice!

As my sister and I have watched and rewatched Hook’ year after year around Christmastime, we’ve become aware just how important this film was not only for us, but a host of somewhat famous personalities who put their careers on the line just to say a couple of lines in a big-time Steven Spielberg movie.

My sister and I have also developed a deep appreciation of one of the greatest characters of cinematic history. Even though he was a secondary character, he possessed a commanding presence every time he was on screen. And when Peter Pan leaves Neverland, he puts this character in charge, acknowledging the character’s obvious leadership skills.

I’m talking, of course, about Thud Butt.

7th Kingdom Queen Updates – Part 3

THE QUEEN AND HER COURT – PART 3

The past couple of days of “The Queen and Her Court”, have introduced you to a few of the warrior women from the Four Horsemens’ fan-favorite property, “7th Kingdom”. Today will be no different as we bring to you three more fatal female furies.

Each of today’s offerings will be made available through a different online retailer, toy news website, or action figure magazine.

First up we have the Bengal beauty to be offered through various Wizard Magazine: Wizard World conventions (http://www.WizardWorld.com) later this year – D’zwirra.

Next we have the steel siren – Ccora. Ccora will be carried by online toy retailer, Corner Store Comics (http://www.CornerStoreComics.com), and like all of the other exclusive variants, will be extremely limited.

Our final lady for today wields the coldest claws of any of the feline warrior women – Oktobria. Not only will Oktobria be offered through October Toys’ (http://www.OctoberToys.com) own website, but October Toys will also have her for sale at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con.

All three of these warrior women will each wield a deadly spear, and a razor sharp small sword. The price of each figure will be determined by each individual retailer in the near future. At a later date, all three of these figures as well as the five previously introduced figures will also be available in a complete set along with all of the other yet-to-be-revealed exclusive variants only through Store Horsemen (http://www.StoreHorsemen.com).

Be sure to check back tomorrow when we’ll introduce the final three femme fatales of the 7th Kingdom!

DCUC rumors – Atomic Skull?

AtomicSkullBlog

So AFI reader hotrod77 found something interesting. In the Myspace blog of comics artist Matthew Clark (who has had runs on several major comics), there are artist turnarounds of DC characters, which–according to Clark–were done at the behest of DC Licensing. (more…)

Housekeeping

Just a couple quick notes:

  • I’m considering making Onan the Barbarian a regular It Figures feature (once a week, probably on Fridays). I like having something of a recurring, signature character. However, he’s arguably a rather gross, childish concept, and I realize it’s quite possible I’m amusing myself far more than I’m amusing most of you, so I’ve put it to a vote. Register your opinion in the poll on the sidebar. Onan’s fate lies in your hands (which you should be sure to wash thoroughly after contact).
  • I have a new interview coming tomorrow, but I need more people to volunteer for Show and Tell and 5 Questions With… As a reminder, “Show and Tell” lets you show off some beloved or rare toy you own, while “5 Questions” is a bit more involved–you answer questions and provide photos of your collection. If you’re interested, just shoot me an email.

More FANtastic Exclusive updates

THE QUEEN AND HER COURT – PART 2

Yesterday, in part 1 of “The Queen and Her Court”, you were introduced to Queen Alluxandra of the Bluddmane Clan and Isadorra of the Ironspynne Clan, the first pair new of figures from the Four Horsemens’ fan-favorite property, “7th Kingdom”.

Today you’re going to be introduced to three more feminine denizens of the 7th Kingdom, each to be offered through a different online retailer, toy news website, or action figure magazines.

Second is the gleaming elemental – Kromius. Available through The Fwoosh (http://www.TheFwoosh.com), the extremely limited Kromius will go fast.

Last up for today is the first of two exclusives to be carried by Big Bad Toy Store (http://www.BigBadToyStore.com), the fair-furred feline fighter – Biggara.

All three of these warrior women will each wield a deadly spear, and a razor sharp small sword. The price of each figure will be determined by each individual retailer at in the near future. At a later date, all three of these figures as well as Queen Alluxandra and Isadorra will also be available in a complete set along with all of the other yet-to-be-revealed exclusive variants only through Store Horsemen (http://www.StoreHorsemen.com).

Be sure to check back tomorrow when we’ll introduce the next three warrior women of the 7th Kingdom!

While I’d like to order the entire set of these, as of right now I just can’t afford them all. But I’m definitely getting two: Kromius and the mechanical one, once she’s revealed.

MOTUC Orko confirmed for 2010

orko

Tucked away in Action Figure Pics’s Q&A was the revelation that Orko will be a part of MOTUC in 2010.

I know that won’t excite all of you, but since there seem to be a good number of He-Fans around here I thought I’d mention it.

The question is, how will he be available? As his own figure? As an accessory to a figure or Battle Cat? In a two-pack with Kowl? As a special incentive for subscribers?
